Games

The popularity of these “games” has gone too far. Something needs to be done.

If I can play devil’s advocate for a minute (taking a page, as it were, from your book Kodama), the future explorers are hardly to be blamed for being attracted to these diversions. At least he’s giving them something to do, which from their perspective, is more than we’re doing at the moment.

Zandi is quite a showman – gathering people under his wing. I would still submit that it’s harmless, except for what it’s leading to and how it affects what we’re doing. Past experience leads me to believe that he’s simply got his own agenda on how this should work, and it doesn’t neccessariy include us.

Maybe we’re not doing enough coordination. Should we be a bit more proactive?

I see how it is. We do all the work and then he tries to cut us out of the loop? :X

Maybe you’re right, Vic. Maybe we do need to take things into our own hands a bit more. In fact, I have an idea of something we can do. It isn’t something I can have ready overnight, but maybe it will be ready by the end of next week.

Good to hear Marie.

The sooner we do something, the better.

I agree that providing the future explorers a means of preparing for what’s ahead is a good thing. I am concerned, however, that we be completely certain that we are not distracted from our current tasks at hand.

Marie, the fact that you think your idea will take about a week seems like it’s a bit higher impact on our schedule than maybe we should be doing at the moment.

I think it would be a good compromise to set up a new forum on these boards for them to discuss their explorations of the surface. It’s a low impact (for us) way to contribute to their preparations.

If any of you have more low impact ideas, feel free to discuss them with me in person.

:)

Don’t worry, Dr. Watson. I have no intention of letting my little idea impact our progress. That’s why I said it would take a week — not because the idea itself will take a week, but that I’ll only be able to work on it a little at a time.

I made some progress over the weekend. :)

OK, my little project is completed: A little piece of the restoration to make available to those on the surface.

I know it’s not as fancy as some of the other cafepress shops, but it’ll do for now.

Let me know what you think.

A t-shirt? This is the best alternative we can offer?

Yes, we have time constraints but this “weekend project” should have never left the drawing board.

I like it Marie, but it’s unfortunate that the image wasn’t taken from higher, like from the Guild Hall rather than the lake level. And you don’t really get the same sense of scale without the surrounding rock formations.

On: September 13, 2002

I like it too, Marie. Go with it. A few people have already found the shop on cafepress, but to make it official, you should post the URL.

Dr. Watson

PS – Kodama, you are free to come up with your own low-impact ideas, if you so desire.

OK.

The cafepress shop can be found here. (http://www.cafepress.com/drcstuff)

There’s only one shirt at the moment. Do you think there would be interest for other items too?

Missing

Has anyone seen Phil Henderson? Last time he checked in, he was heading to the Garden Age. When I didn’t see him again on Friday, I assumed he just left early for the weekend. But he hasn’t shown up today, and I cannot reach him on his KI.

Reminder –

All DRC members and the leaders of each search party were to assemble in the Tokotah to update us on the search progress.

The meeting began ten minutes ago. I hope those of you who are tardy have a good excuse.

Hmmmmmm…

We’ve been monitoring the KI Host Hub and just got a “pickup” locator signal on Henderson in Eder Kemo (the Bevin garden age.)

It’s not a full signal – bit of a mystery actually.

Anyone heading that direction. I’ll keep my eye on the Hub.

Vic,

I took a quick pass through the Garden but did not see Phil or get any response from him or his KI.

Let me know if you get any more of these “blips”.

Has anyone else gotten anything from Phil?

Dr. Watson

It’s gone now. It was sporadic for the last 15 minutes.

I’ll monitor the Host Hub more closely. I’ll post here if I see any more activity.

There it is again!

Anyone available to check it out?

V

Very strong now – almost a full signal.

If no one is around I may head there myself. Let me know!

This is driving me crazy!

I don’t want to leave the Hub, but this signal should be checked. Where is everyone?

V

Full KI signal now! His KI is apparently there, but he’s not replying.

On: September 23, 2002

Vic,

It is very unfortunate that no one was able to make it to the Garden Age to verify this latest signal. I went several times over the weekend, and never saw anything or got any kind of signal from him or his KI.

Keep us posted. If you see the signal again, please stay at the hub and monitor it.

Also, are you sure it is coming from Eder Kemo?

Anyone available?

Either he’s in Eder Kemo, or his KI is.

Dr. Watson??????

I’ve still got the full signal!

No signal – gone again.

Anyone get there???!!

Next time I’m going myself. I can’t stand waiting here!

V

On: September 23, 2002

You’re right, Vic. This is frustrating.

I was hoping that your monitoring of the Hub might give us a better fix on his location. Or maybe we would start to see a pattern of when the signal starts/stops.

Next time, if you don’t get a response from someone else, go for it.

I hope we catch the next one.

Good news, Vic!

One of the authorized explorers made it there, and got a message from Phil.

I don’t know all the details yet. I just wanted to let you know. I’ll post more details when I have them.

:)

Brilliant!

I’ve been monitoring the KI Host Hub and never thought to tune it for other KI identifiers. I could have seen if anyone else linked in.

Anyway, is Phil alright? Should we schedule some kind of meeting to see if he can answer some questions? I am dying to get some information.

I still don’t have a KI signal from him. Is he still wearing it, or is it just malfunctioning?

V

Please make sure he brings his KI to me. I’d like to find out why I was getting those crazy signals.

???????

Posted By: Dr. Watson
On: September 24, 2002

It’s not quite what you’re thinking, Vic.

Phil contacted one of the authorized explorers who went looking for him in the Eder Kemo during the last signal.

I spoke to the explorer at length last night on Ae’gura to find out the details.

It was a very brief conversation via the KI. Phil told the explorer that he was OK, but that he wasn’t coming back. The explorer tried to ask several questions, but Phil did not provide many answers. He just seemed very excited that he had “found a way”.

The explorer asked Phil to send him a KI photo of his current location, but Phil refused.

Basically, all we know is that Phil somehow managed to get through that door we’ve never been able to open, and he implied that we would find out how, too, one day.

Phil also mentioned that this would be the last signal we got from him.

To me, that can only mean that he’s intentionally disabling his KI. He doesn’t want to be found for some reason.

What do you think, Vic?

Moving on…

Posted By: Victor Laxman
On: September 30, 2002

I’ve spent the weekend trying to pick up traces of phend’s KI without success. I’m frustrated with my lack of understanding of the situation, but I’m not sure what else I can do.

So I’m moving on, and thought I would bring everyone up to date.

As many of you know, certain members of the DRC team have been making use of the cavern MT links primarily to verify their stability. My team has made substantial use of these links, and quite frankly, would find it hard to live without them. We feel that they’re as reliable as any Linking Books we’ve found to date.

Without getting into a debate on the stability, just wanted to let you know that we’ve managed to improve their functionality.

The processes and mechanisms in the Nexus are definitely KI related. It’s apparent that the MT links were adapted to be used in conjunction with the KI, even though we’ve been making use of them without that function.

Anyway, long story short, for security reasons we put high priority on getting the KI identifcation feature to work. It’s now functional and translated, using basically what we learned from the KI itself. What that means to MT users is that, in the near future you will find that you will need to register your KI at a particular MT link in order to have it show up as a destination in the Nexus.

I should also mention that it’s my opinion that the MT links should be approved for all cavern personnel.

V

On: October 03, 2002

Vic,

I completely understand how useful the MT Books are for getting around efficiently.

However, there are still safety and reliability issues to address before giving the MT system final approval. Specifically, the oddities of the Nexus are of particular concern to me.

It’s easy to get excited and jump the gun, but we need to keep safety as our number one priority.

I’m putting this on the agenda for further discussion in next week’s meeting.

Dr. Watson

On: October 08, 2002

Dr. Watson,

With all due respect…

(I always love a good debate.)

It seems as if we’re certainly already using peculiar D’ni technology all over the place – the linking books being the first example. So the fact that we don’t understand the subtleties of MT/Nexus linking shouldn’t bother us.

It reminds me of quantum theory. No one knows exactly how it works, but it’s incredibly reliable and repeatable. (I know you’re a sucker for quantum arguments.) ;-)

I’d love to see more research into the Nexus “distribution” behavior. (For all we know it could even be accomplished mechanically.) But I don’t think we have the time. There is too much other work to be done, and the MT/Nexus links actually help us work more effectively.

Did I change your mind?

V

On: October 11, 2002

As we discussed in this week’s meeting, you don’t really need to change my mind, Vic. I agree with you in principle. I just want us to keep the safety of everyone in mind and not jump the gun.

We’ve added the Nexus to the schedule. It probably won’t take as long as some of the larger areas to verify, but let’s stick to the formalities of the approval process.

Dr. Watson

Posted By: Dr. Kodama

Then let’s place the formalities of approval on the fast track. As in tomorrow? The MT System has been working perfectly for my teams and it would be nice to have it official as soon as possible.
